Blocked account requirement for the student visa

Per year (deposit before the visa)
Per month (paid out to the student)

This is the student’s own money, not an extra fee. It is deposited in a German blocked account before the visa appointment and paid back to the student every month to cover the living costs above.

These figures are estimates for planning only. Real costs depend on the university, the room you find and personal spending. Tuition-free public universities still charge a semester contribution. Prices checked on 2 October 2026.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is a blocked account?

A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a German bank account that the student opens before applying for the visa. For 2026 the German Embassy in Colombo asks for at least €11,904 for one year. After arriving, the student can take out only €992 a month. This shows the embassy that living costs are covered. The money still belongs to the student.

Is the blocked account an extra cost on top of these figures?

No. The blocked account is the first year’s living money, paid in advance. It is paid back to the student every month and is used for rent, food and insurance. If monthly costs are higher than €992, for example with a shared flat in Munich, Hamburg or Frankfurt, plan to send the difference. The bank’s fees for the account are extra.

Do German universities charge tuition fees?

Most public universities charge no tuition, only a semester contribution of about €100 to €410, which often includes a public transport ticket. There are exceptions: universities in Baden-Württemberg, such as Stuttgart, charge non-EU students €1,500 per semester, and TUM in Munich charges most non-EU master’s students €4,000 to €6,000 per semester. Private universities set their own fees.
